Mounting soapbox: So this is the scene of my polling station this morning as NYC holds its special election for public advocate. While I know it’s a “special election” with historically lower turnout THIS is precisely what got us Trump to begin with. Social media is filled with self-proclaimed political pundits and yet, when it comes time to vote polling stations are empty. I am STILL concerned that we have not fully grasp the significance of political participation at every level. The reason McConnell was able to hold up Garland’s appointment for a year and Trump was able to get Kavanaugh into office was because of what people had already done on the local level. Furthermore, the ONLY real recourse to oppressive federal policies is strong city and state officials who are willing to fight for higher wages, taxes on the wealthy, stronger environmental regulations, investments in public education, quality public housing, and basically all the sh*t this administration has neglected. Long story short: #localelectionsmatter and there is one in NYC TODAY!!!! #govote #publicadvocate #nyc
